Chapter Seven

“Are you nervous?” Damien raised an eyebrow at me.

“Should I be?” I laughed anxious. The truth was, I was insanely nervous – today was the day Damien was taking me to meet his daughters, Arabella and Annaliese. It had been four months since we’d started seeing each other…and I was starting to feel like I was really falling for him.

“They’re intense little girls,” Damien said. He steered the black Porsche towards the curb. “But they should like you.”

I bit my lip. I’d never really felt like I was good around kids. Jacob was an obvious exception, but he was so easy most of the time that I didn’t notice. Most of the time, I couldn’t tell whether or not kids wanted me to take them seriously. Was I supposed to squat down to their height and make jokes, or should I just treat them little adults?

Damien reached for my thigh and squeezed. “You’ll be great,” he said. “You’re very easy to get along with.”

This time, I laughed for real. “That’s pretty rich coming from you,” I said slyly. “I take it you’ve already forgotten that glass of wine I threw in your face.”

Damien laughed. “No,” he said. “But I deserved it. Trust me.”

“Oh, I know,” I said. “You were such an asshole.”

Damien pushed the car into park and pulled me into a deep embrace. He kissed me passionately, stroking my back with his large, capable hands.

“Just relax and be yourself,” Damien said. “It’s only an afternoon. I’m sure we’ll be fine.”

I waited in the car as Damien went inside his house and relieved the babysitter. Minutes later, he appeared with two little brunettes in tow. I snickered when I saw them – Annaliese and Arabella were the spitting image of their father, down to the little smirks on their faces. Like Damien, they had pale skin, dark eyes, and silky dark hair.

Damien opened the back seat and the two girls obediently climbed into their booster seats.

“Hello,” one of them said solemnly. “I’m Arabella.”

“Hi, Arabella,” I said. “I like your barrettes. Bats are one of my favorite animals.”

Arabella giggled, then touched the bat-shaped barrette in her dark hair. “Me, too,” she said shyly. “Annaliese is afraid of them. She’s worried they’ll get stuck in her hair.”

“Am not!” Annaliese cried. “I’m Annaliese,” she said in a loud, bossy voice. “And I’m the older twin.”

“You are not!” Arabella cried.

“Am too,” Annaliese argued. “By three minutes!”

“It’s very nice to meet you, Annaliese,” I said. Like Arabella, she was clad in dark purple clothing. But she had a slight smattering of freckles across her nose, and a silver necklace shaped like a ladybug.

Annaliese blushed and looked down in her lap.

“Annaliese, what do we say to Elisabeth?”

“Thank you,” Annaliese whispered.

“She’s shy,” Damien mouthed to me. I nodded.

“So, girls, what would you like to do today?” Damien smiled at his kids, turning his body in the seat as he started the car.

“I don’t know,” they responded in unison.

“Elisabeth?” Damien turned to me with one brow raised. “Any ideas?”

“Oh, I don’t know,” I said lamely.
